MARIANO LOPEZ MAISANAVA. Born in ZARAGOZA (SPAIN) 1959.

foto-inicioI’ve always had a close association to wood as by trade I am a carpenter. However, I began to feel the need to model wood when I was studying in the Zaragoza School of Arts. I felt I needed to learn other techniques for shaping the ideas I had floating around in my head.

In 1996 I began to carve. I met Daniel and José Luis Clavero, carvers from whom I learnt new techniques and use of tools. Relief carving was the first stage before progressing step by step in to sculptures. I see objects, landscapes and photographs that I like and then interpret them in wood.

Over the last few years I have visited the north of India on a regular basis, travelling around the regions of Ladakh and Zanskar, where the inhabitants are mainly Buddhists. I endeavor to include my personal impression of the emotions and experiences I’ve shared with these people in some of my work. Also I attempt to reflect the textures and finishes which permeate through their everyday life from their implements, to their houses and “Gompas”.  Photography is another hobby of mine and I’ve been able to frame a number of my photographs from these regions.
